SiteThe Jabal Omar Development is located within the center of the city of Makkah. The site, which covers an area of approx. 23 ha, faces the western side of the Haram. You will find a site plan and additional information on the area under 'information'.
Project contentDesign Review of the proposed masterplan of the Jabal Omar development.
ObjectiveThe objective of the Jabal Omar development is to offer first class accommodation and supporting facilities for visitors and residents of the holy city of Makkah. The development project will help to accommodate increasing numbers of pilgrims and seasonal visitors and will provide utilities and extended public spaces around the Haram.

The development will provide the following facilities and amenities:
- Gross built up area of 120,000 sqm
- Hotels and residential units for 35,000 people
- Offices and commercial centers
- Prayer facilities for 100,000 people
- Parking facilities for 12,000 vehicles
- Roads, pedestrian pathways and tunnels
- Utility tunnels
ProcedureThe Masterplan Design Review was organized as a procedure comprising two offices which have been asked to review the existing master plan.
The participating offices were:
• Abdulaziz Darwish, Jeddah, KSA
• Ateliers Lion, Paris, France

The process was accompanied by a number of experts
who met at two workshops for each proposal to give the
client a final recommendation to continue the development
on base of one of the two proposals.
Further commissioningAcknowledging the recommendations, the promoter intends to commission one of the participating firms with the detailed elaboration of the urban master plan.
